Presentation by M. Gorbacheva entitled "Orthodox Jewish Discourse on the Six-Day War (1967)"
On 17 June, as part of the regular session of the workshop "Studies of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", a paper was presented by M. Gorbacheva, a member of the Research Group of Studying the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and a research assistant in the Department of Israel and Jewish Communities at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The paper examined the rhetoric of key representatives of Jewish ultra-Orthodoxy and religious Zionists regarding the Six-Day War and its outcome.
M. Gorbacheva elucidated the concepts of "orthodoxy" and "religious Zionism" and identified the "balance of power" within the religious discourse on the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel.
The discussants were T. Nosenko, PhD, Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Israel and Jewish Communities of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, and G. Zelenina, PhD, Associate Professor at the Department of Jewish Studies, Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University.
The seminar was moderated by L. Khlebnikova, PhD in History, Head of the Research Group of Studying the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies. The presentation was followed by a discussion in which members of the Research Group of Studying the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict – T. Karasova, PhD in History, G. Lukyanov and M. Zubovsky – took part.
