10 June 2026
Presentation by E. Naumova entitled "From the “third force” to political marginalisation: the crisis of the Palestinian left following the 2006 elections"
On 10 June, E. Naumova, a PhD candidate at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies and a member of the Research Group of Studying the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, presented her paper at the first session of the seminar "Studies of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Israeli-Palestinian conflict"
The central themes of E. Naumova’s presentation were why the Palestinian left had failed to emerge as an independent "third force" alongside Fatah and the Islamist movements, and whether there is now an opportunity to develop a new Palestinian left-wing political movement outside the framework of the old party structures.
The panellists were V. Kuznetsov, Doctor of Political Science, Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Head of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, and M. Zubovskiy, research assistant at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies.
The seminar was moderated by G. Lukyanov, a research fellow at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The presentation covered the history of the major left-wing movements in Palestine: the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Palestinian People’s Party; their role in the Palestinian resistance; the distinctive features of their ideologies; and an analysis of the crisis these organisations have been facing in recent years.
Following the presentation, a discussion took place in which both panellists and other seminar participants spoke, including A. Demchenko and T. Karasova, members of the Research Group of Studying the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.
Following the presentation, a series of articles on this topic is planned for publication.
